Better Value for Schools: Making Public-Private Partnerships Work for Educational Infrastructure

30-31 May 2011

Athens, Greece

Organised by the

and the

School Buildings Organisation, Greece

A key challenge for governments is to meet the changing needs of education within the constraints of tighter budgets. As governments seek to find ways of improving value for money from PPP agreements that can last over 25 years, this conference will explore the key issues behind successful PPPs in educational infrastructure, drawing on the expertise from different countries, the European Investment Bank and other institutions.

Apr 27, 2011: Drivers and Barriers Drivers and Barriers to Implementing ESD with Focus on UNESCO's Action and Strategy Goals for the second Half of the Decade. Drivers and Barriers UNESCO.pdf Apr 3, 2010: Are Women the Key to Sustainable Development? Sustainable Development Insights, No. 3, April 2010
By Candice Stevens, Boston University

This issue explores the possible link between advances in achieving gender equality and advances in achieving sustainable development goals. The paper concludes, “As indicated by both theory and evidence, the lack of progress on gender equality may be at the heart of the failure to advance on sustainable development. If women were in more productive and decision-making roles, we could be moving faster and more assuredly towards sustainability in the economic, social and environmental sense. Sustainable development is a political concept because it is about good governance, which will be hard to achieve until we get closer to gender parity. Research is needed to test the hypothesis that women are more risk-averse than men and that women leaders would be more apt to follow sustainable development pathways. Given the importance of gender to sustainability, these issues should feature more prominently in sustainable development discussions and be highlighted in a 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development.”

Sustainable Development Insights is a series of short policy essays supporting the Sustainable Development Knowledge Partnership (SDKP) and edited by Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future. The series seeks to promote a broad interdisciplinary dialogue on how to accelerate sustainable development at all levels.

Candice Stevens is the former Sustainable Development Advisor of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), where she was also Head of the Industry Division, the Science and Technology Policy Division, and the Environment and Trade Unit. Previously, Dr. Stevens was an economist in the US government in the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of the Interior, the Department of Commerce, and the US Congress. She now consults on economics of sustainable development from her office in Paris, France. UNsdkp003fsingle.pdf

AUTHOR GUIDELINES
Sustainable Development in Pre-School and Pre-University Education is the only professional periodical for science and social science teachers, as well as for those who are responsible for the projects concerning the education for sustainable development at primary and secondary level, in student homes, and in centres that support educational and free-time activities. It can be of use to any teachers; it is explicitely holistically and inter-disciplinarily oriented, and it pursues the goals of lifelong learning.

Professional articles in the periodical Sustainable Development in Pre-School and Pre-University Education serve as a link between the theory of the sustainable development and the educational practice, they present modern didactic approaches to the education for sustainable development, and follow the concepts of the global dimension of the curriculum. The inclusion of foreign authors makes the information about worldwide novelties possible.

We aim at publishing:
- articles based on holistic and global approach, containing practical, methodical and performing guidelines to teachers teaching different subjects and making use of interdisciplinary connections within the education for sustainable development;
- articles dealing with the global dimension of the curriculum, which in addition to the sustainable development and current environmental topics include content concerning global citizenship, conflict-solving, social rights, values and participation, interdependence, human rights, and acceptance of differentness:
- articles describing the inclusion of the content and aims of the education for sustainable development into the modernized syllabi;
- articles concerning the implementation of value and quality-based criteria of the schools involved in the education for sustainable development;
- articles including the theoretical basis, concepts, content, strategies and aims of the education for sustainable development, together with their implementation in educational practice;
- foreign, principally European, initiatives and experience in the field of project work, being part of the education for sustainable development;
- articles serving as a means of communication among teachers, parents and the local authorities;
- articles dealing with the evaluation and presentation of learning materials and aids, referring to the education for sustainable development;
- articles about the functioning of non-governmental institutions in the field of the education for sustainable development.

The priority will be given to the articles that are didactically oriented and refer to the aims and content of the education for sustainable development, as well as to the development of the global dimension of the curriculum.

The periodical Sustainable Development in Pre-School and Pre-University Education will be reserved to original, unpublished articles. All articles are supposed to be accompanied by a title, the name of the authors and of the institution where they work, and by an abstract (possibly also translated into English) with key words. The aricles must be at professional level, written in gramatically and stylistically normal language.

The abstract should not exceed 200 words; it appears on the front page of the article, together with the key words, both following the title. The abstract should provide the understanding of the content of the article without the need of reading the entire article. It should be written in the third person, summarizing the essentials of the topic treated, together with the explanation of its aims, methods and techniques – in case of research approach – and the principal results and conclusions.

The papers resulting from the study or from professional meetings will not be accepted unless they are adapted for the publication in this periodical.

The authors are responsible for the content of their articles; therefore their complete signature (name(s) and surname(s)) is needed. The signed form Prijavnica prispevka (Registry of the article) can be found on the website of Zavod Republike Slovenije za šolstvo http://www.zrss.si/ (Založba, prijavnica prispevka).

Dec 1, 2006: Follow up on Quality Criteria in Germany Education for Sustainable Development –Learning Goals and Opportunities for Secondary Level
This guide sets out the competencies that pupils should have acquired on completion of secondary education within the scope of education for sustainable development. The guide is intended to support teachers, school administrations, parents and pupils, enabling them to act systematically and appropriately in this area. The guide should additionally set guidelines for schools which intend to integrate education for sustainable development into their school programme. For teacher trainers, the guide is to be seen as a basis for the creation of training measures, and education authorities can see it as an instrument providing important guidance in setting curricular goals.
